![]() ![]() The moment I got the AEC up and running, I finally understood why it's called an air eraser. Well, absolutely I was using the wrong tool. So, I bought a AEC and had it overnighted, hoping I was just using the wrong tool. To me, it seemed that no matter what the pressure or sand agent, I saw absolutely no results. I bought a cheap badger airbrush and threw tons of media at fossils. Started with some nice air scribes, then tried air abrasion. Mix this bag with 8 ounces of Acetone for most uses. PVA can be dissolved with a 50/50 solution of acetone/ethyl alcohol or even pure ethyl alcohol to create a substitute for "Butvar". Thinner solution will leave a light protective coating on the surface of prepared fossils, and is commonly used on fish from the Green River Formation. A thick solution will work best to slow the weathering if a specimen must be secured for later excavation and extraction, or for keeping fragile bones and teeth together. This is later thinned with additional acetone for different viscosities for various uses. These nontoxic beads are dissolved in pure acetone (approximately 1 part PVA beads to 8 parts Acetone) to make a concentrate. ![]() We use high-purity, Polyvinyl Acetate Beads (PVA), as a penetrant and coating for fossils in both the field and in the laboratory. PVA (Polyvinyl Acetate, commonly known as Vinac™ *) is a high quality preservative coating and consolidator that can be used on a huge variety of fossils. We use it for all of the fossils that come out of our Green River Formation Quarry, from crocodiles to stingrays and fish to shrimp. It operates on 55-65 PSI, giving you plenty of power but because of the short throw you also get a lot of precision on delicate fossils. It is designed to be a multi-purpose scribe, able to handle a wide variety of fossils and matrix types. 3400 RPMI and 2.5 CFM and uses a ¼ inlet. It is a bit different than other scribes in that it has metal bushings rather than nylon to provide more accuracy and more durability. This helps extend its life and provide accuracy. It has a carbide stylus for strength and even better a replacement is very inexpensive if you ever need one, less than $15. It also does not vent the air through the tip like other brands. I designed this scribe to vent out the sides near the tip, better preserving delicate fossils and not blowing them apart, while still blowing away the removed matrix and dust. This tool was designed by Fossil Shack for fossil preparation. It is not meant for bulk matrix removal, but for fossils requiring detail and precision. We designed this tool with Green River fossil fish in mind but it works on a huge assortment of fossils. Because we want everyone to be able to afford a nice scribe tool, we have priced this one well below any other quality tool on the market. ![]()
