![]() ![]() Some ornamental grasses will remain attractive through the better part of the winter. You can do the job in the fall after the foliage dies, or leave it in place through the winter and cut it back in the spring. The Miscanthus grasses (Zebra grass being one of these) are late to emerge in spring – so don’t be alarmed if this plant shows no signs of life until after most other plants have sprouted. When to cut back your ornamental grass is governed by the type of grass and your personal preference. You may want to mark the location so it is easy to find in spring. Once the ground freezes cover the plant with evergreen boughs (from a discarded Christmas tree) or straw. Sink the pot into the soil to insulate the roots. Avoid the drier vent or other sources of artificial heat that can cause freezing and thawing. ![]() Simply find a protected spot near the house, garage or other location. It is difficult to keep the plants alive in the poor growing conditions. Moving the plant indoors for winter would be my last resort. But if you have severe winters, it is recommended to plant zebra grass in spring. If they are not watered during drought, they tend to go dormant resulting. Cool season grasses also seem to do better and have better foliage quality when temperatures are cool or if they are given sufficient water during drought periods. ‘Little Zebra’, sometimes commonly called dwarf zebra grass, is a compact cultivar that typically grows in a clump to 3-4’ tall and to 2-3’ wide. Cool season grass will start to grow early in the spring and may even remain semi-evergreen over the winter. ![]() Could I grow the grass in a planter indoors until spring? This is my first venture into gardening in general, and I know nothing about ornamental grasses. It typically grows in a substantial clump to 4-6’ tall, but sends up flower stalks to 2’ above the foliage, thus bringing the total height of the grass to 6-8’ tall when in flower. It recently arrived this fall and is very tiny! It is in a 2.25" pot and I am worried it will not survive the cold northern winter. For warm season grasses (more common), this is best done in late winter to early spring. I purchased a Dwarf Zebra Grass from a mail order catalogue. It provides year-round interest and texture, with its variegated foliage turning golden in fall and beige in winter. ![]()
